From Childcare to Outdoor Guide: Britt’s Path to Her Dream Job

Britt’s journey from childcare to Tahune Adventures shows how skills in one profession can be applied to a different field, especially with the right guidance and support.

Britt has always had a passion for working with people and the outdoors. With nine years of experience in early childhood education, she has nurtured and guided children in their development, both indoors and out. Alongside her career in childcare, Britt has studied and taught outdoor recreation, often leading groups of children in outdoor camps, blending her love for education with her enthusiasm for the natural world. Prior to this, she also gained valuable customer service experience working in retail at a local news agency in Victoria.

When Britt decided to make a significant life change by moving to Tasmania, her goal was clear: she wanted to immerse herself in the outdoor lifestyle that Tasmania offers and share her passion for nature with others. It was during her job search that she discovered the Southern Employment & Training Network (SETN). She found an exciting opportunity advertised through the Huon Valley jobs page on Facebook which was shared from SETN’s page, which led her to connect with SETN and ultimately to her dream job at Tahune Adventures.

For Britt, the transition from childcare to a role as an Outdoor Guide was not without its challenges. "It was really hard navigating the job search because I only had qualifications in childcare and outdoor recreation," she explained. However, Gary SETN’s Local Engagement Officer was instrumental in helping her realise that the skills she developed through childcare were highly transferable. "Gary did an amazing job showing me that my childcare skills extend so much further than just that field. Those skills apply in so many ways, and thanks to this, I was able to secure my dream job."

Now working as an Outdoor Guide at Tahune Adventures, Britt is thriving in her new role. "I absolutely love everything about my new employer. It's an amazing group of people that I get to work alongside and learn from. I get to be in nature, doing what I love most, and sharing those experiences with fellow staff and the public."

Her journey from childcare to Tahune Adventures shows how skills in one profession can be applied to a different field, especially with the right guidance and support. Britt’s story is an inspiring example of how embracing change and pursuing your passion can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
